Spring Sprung
Welcome to Spring! A quick glance at the BOM's 7 day outlook confirms that Spring has well and truely sprung out of the box. We've got 25˚ today, 26 tomorrow, 27 on Saturday... you get the picture. Did Winter even show up this year?
With Spring's arrival, the shark meshing program on our beaches is back. The program is one part of the NSW government's shark mitigation strategy and has its detractors as a dated, blunt instrument that poses a risk to migrating whales and other non-target marine life. But, if they save one human life a year... it's a fraught debate and both sides are valid.
With the increase in drone surveillance this season, we may get a better idea of the meshing programs actual effectiveness. As surfers and ocean users, the issue of sharks and our place in the ocean is one one we need to confront with sensitivity and science.
This morning conditions are calm on the water with a mix of small south swells and a tiny bit of wind-swell energy out of the ENE. It's not pumping but there's a few fun ones about.
Make A Wave is back again this September to raise funds for SurfAid programs in remote surfing destinations. You might be doing it, or you might know someone that is surfing everyday this month; be generous and give a little or a lot so the surfing community can give back to the communities in need at our favourite destinations.
Enough from me.
