NintyFive Percent

As surfers, swimmers and ocean lovers we immerse ourselves in the sea on an almost daily pursuit of that personal feeling that only comes from the sea.  Whether it be the feeling of connectedness of being part of a body of water that covers two-thirds of our earth, the peace that only underwater offers, or the feeling of humble insignificance in the presence of something so persistence and powerful.  The ocean offers each one of us something person, but climate change is having an impact on our oceans and the effects are already being felt on the coral reef across the globe. The NinetyFive Percent movement is bringing art and science together with an exhibition to raise awareness of global coral bleaching. The environmental phenomenon threatens 38% of the world’s coral reefs and will kill 12,000 square kilometres of reef by the end of this year, according to the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

20 talented and committed artists, including many from the Northern Beaches, will present their visual representations of the impact of global warming on our oceans in an exhibition opening Thursday 5 November at District 01, Surry Hills.

“I created NinetyFive Percent as a vehicle to share the hard work being done to analyse and visually document what is happening in our oceans,” says Jaimee Paul, Director of NinetyFive Percent.   Ten per cent of all sales will be donated to Underwater Earth, a not-for-profit organisation established to visually document the changes in oceans caused by global warming.

The exhibition opens Thursday 5 Nov with an opening night event from 6-9pm and will hang until Saturday afternoon.
